People started settling in Höfn (an important trading post) more than a century ago and the village got its municipal rights in 1988.

Höfn is an Icelandic fishery village. It is situated on a spit of land in the only navigable estuary of the country. The main trades are fish, fishing, fish processing and tourism.

A part of the municipal landscape to be found in Höfn, also known and called Hornafjarðarbær has been declared a Nature Reserve
