Stokkseyri was founded around 900 AD by the settler Hásteinn Atlason. In previous times it was an important fishing and trading village in Iceland but nowadays it has become more of a tourist attraction.
Stokkseyri is maybe most famous for being the hometown of Þuríður Einarsdóttir. She was a captain of a fishing boat in the late 18th and early 19th century. In those times it was considered a unique profession for a woman, until this day it is still thought to be unique. A museum was built in Stokkseyri in the memory of Lady Þuríður called “Þuríðar cottage”
