In 1949 the museum vas founded by Þórður Tómasson.

Þórður was born in 1921 at Vallnatún in South-Iceland. Young at age Þórður developed an in Iceland an interest in Icelandic culture and its conservation. Together with all his work at the museum Þórður published many books and the aspects of Icelandic folk culture.

Þórður was awarded an honorary doctorate of the University of Iceland for is constribution to the cultural history of Iceland in 1997.
