Stykkishólmur is situated on the Snæfellsnes peninsula; it is a center of commerce and services for the area. The village gets it name from a small island with the name “Stykkið” (means "the piece" in Icelandic)
The people of Stykkishólmur make their living from tourism and fishing. It was discovered in the 1550 that the village is in a really favorable position and a trading post was founded. The ferry Baldur makes regular journeys over Breiðarfjörður to the West Fjords. Baldur connects Snæfellsnes to the West Fjords (stops at Brjánslækur)
Iceland´s oldest metrological station - some say the world´s oldest - is in Stykkisholmur. It was first manned in 1845.
