Facts about Iceland

ICELAND is Europe's second largest island (103,000 sq. km). The present population is approximately 300,000. More than half of the population lives in or around the capital, Reykjavík. The rest is dispersed around the coastal fringes, leaving the highland or the centre of the country uninhabited.

Thanks to the Gulf Stream the climate in Iceland is warmer than its name suggests.

Iceland is Europe's youngest country, geologically speaking, and was also the last European country to be settled by man. The rugged, wild landscape is like no other place on Earth. On this unique island you will discover the greatest contrasts possible in Mother Nature i.e.: glaciers, active volcanoes, hot springs, extensive lava fields, sand deserts, opulent vegetation etc.

Iceland is closer than you think. Reykjavík, Europe's northernmost capital is nearer to New York than Los Angeles and only 2 - 3 hours flying time from any city in Western Europe.

Is it difficult to get to Iceland?

Frequent flights are to Iceland from main cities in Europe and USA. Flight times from Europe are around 3 hours and from USA 5 hours. Passengers arrive at Keflavik International airport, 45 km from Reykjavik. During summer it is possible to travel by a ferry from Denmark, Norway and Scotland via Faroe islands to Iceland.

How cold does it get?

Thanks to the Gulfstream, Iceland is not as cold as it sounds. Temperatures are moderate year-around. Average July temperatures are around 11 C in Reykjavik. Average January and February temperatures in Reykjavik are around zero.

Credit Cards in Iceland

They are accepted by most shops, restaurants and organisations and are widely used. The major credit cards in Iceland are Visa and Eurocard, although other cards are accepted as well.
