Reykjavik Capital

Reykjavik (population 190,000 with nearby communities) is the country's capital and the heart of the modern Icelandic society.

It is a peaceful and a natural city with many protected open areas and surely the only capital in the world to boast a great Salmon River, Elliðaár, within the city limits.

Reykjavík is a young city which has grown from little more than a village within the space of the past century. The mixture of old and new architecture of mainly low and brightly painted houses gives the city a friendly and toy like impression.

The old town centre contains some charming buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries presenting good examples of the history. 

Reykjavík serves as a government, service, culture and business center for the whole country and has changed tremendously in the past decades to a more cosmopolitan city.

Bearing witness to the city's youthful exuberance are the wide range of high quality cultural activities and the exciting nightlife on offer, both of which invite comparison with cities several times the size in other countries.
