Eimskip’s Cargo Vessels

An interesting experience and a different way to travel !

Eimskip offers weekly departures to/from Europe with their vessels Dettifoss and Goðafoss. The vessels sail the “Northern Route” from Reykjavik to Thorshavn, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Fredriksstad, Aarhus and then again to Thorshavn and back to Reykjavík.

There are 2 ships doing this sailing. One of them is going to a dock in week 24 and 25. That means there will be no passenger transportation from Rotterdam 8-15.June and no passenger transportation from Reykjavik 15-22.June.

The vessels were built in Fredrikshavn in Denmark in the year of 1995. The ships can carry 1457 containers and are about 165 m. length and therefore the largest merchant vessels in Iceland.

Facilities
It is popular during summertime to sail to Iceland on these cargo boats. The passenger facilities are nice, even though the vessels are designed mainly as transport vessels. There are two cabins onboard, each with a double bed (width 140 cm). No bunkbeds, twinbeds nor extra beds are available. The maximum passenger capacity however is only three people due to the number of availability in the lifeboats. The cabins are located on the 7th floor, with both toilet and shower. Elderly people are adviced that there are steep stairs to climb in the ship so they must be quite fit for the journey. Eimskip does not recommend that children travel on board the vessels due to the uneven weather conditions. Luggage is limited to 60 kg per person or 3 suitcases.

Passengers can make themselves comfortable in the vessel's lounge where they can watch video, play cards, chess or just relax. The dining room serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Duty-free goods are sold on board including liquor, tobacco and sweets in addition to necessary hygiene products. Overnight stays are not offered on board when the vessel calls at Reykjavik.

Passengers are invited to go sightseeing at other ports of call or can stay on board if they wish. Arrival and departure times can change, so please confirm the departure time the day before. Eimskip’s agents at each location (please see phone number below) and customer services (tel: + 354-525 7800) provide information regarding the exact times.
